Architect.
Born in Los Angeles, California in 1943.
He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at
Los Angeles and attained two Masters of Architecture from the
University of California at Berkeley, College of Environmental
Design and from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
Lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Head of his own architectural firm Eric Owen Moss Architects (EOM).
His projects have been published and exhibited nationally and
internationally and have received numerous awards over the years
from architectural, planning, and civic institutions. He is the
recipient of 41 design awards from Progressive Architecture and the
American Institute of Architects as well as the Award in
Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999.
Mr. Moss is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and
received the 2001 AIA/LA Gold Medal Award for the achievement of an
outstanding body of architectural works both in Los Angeles and
abroad. In addition to practicing, he has taught at various
institutions including the Hochschule, Harvard and Yale Universities
and was appointed the director of the Southern California Institute
of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 2002.
Among his best known works are Samitaur / Kodak in Los Angeles,
which was exhibited in the 1996 Venice Biennale, and several large
on-going projects in Culver City which include retail, office and
entertainment facilities.
Current projects include a mixed-use development in St. Petersburg,
Russia, the Queens Museum of Art in Queens, New York, and an
eight-acre redevelopment project in downtown Los Angeles, California. The latest completed buildings are the
Stealth, an
office for a post-production film firm, the Beehive, a conference
facility and offices for medschool.com, and the Pterodactyl, a
two-story office building on top of a four-level parking structure.
Numerous books have been published on Mr. Moss' works ranging from
those focused on one project, such as The Box, to those focusing on
many projects, such as the recent Italian monograph, Eric Owen Moss,
to those concentrating on Mr. Moss' theory of design, such as
Gnostic Architecture. His third monograph by Rizzoli, Eric Owen Moss
Buildings and Projects 3, is due out in the fall of 2002.
