For more than 15 years, the MAK, as a central interface of
global communication, has been collaborating with the MUAR -
Schusev State Museum of Architecture, Moscow . In doing so,
the MAK manifests its intense dedication to trends of
contemporary architecture, art, and design, and operates as
an international platform for progressive artistic
interventions of sociopolitical relevance. Especially in
recent years, the MUAR has become an institution providing
decisive impulses in the field of urban development and
initiating debates that focus on and publicize radical
breaks in the cityscape. The collaboration between the two
museums has, among other things, resulted in a number of
joint exhibitions such as 'The Tyranny of the Beautiful:
Architecture during the Stalin Era' (1994), 'Heaven's Gift'
(2001), and 'Alexander Rodchenko. Spatial Constructions'
(2005). Both institutions explore issues concerning the
production, communication, preservation, and reorientation
of art. Committed to the merging of tradition and experiment,
the museums are clearly aware of the significance of
cultural heritage. Caring for it constitutes their essential
task. Yet, an approach limited to the level of preservation
will inevitably lead to a conservative attitude to be
avoided. Thus, both museums walk a thin line, remaining
workshops of the future thanks to their courage to
experiment and continuous reflection and stimulating each
other in this regard.
In order to continue this intense and successful cooperation,
further exhibitions are being planned which will elucidate
the subject of the Russian avant-garde and its influence on
current questions.
